How to blog 20 blogging tricks to enhance your writing.
Many emails are sent seeking advice on how to start a blog, about blog topics as well as about how to write meaningful content. The bulk of this piece explained how to start a blog, but that's only the first step. It's now time to begin writing and publishing your content.
Here are 20 tips for beginners on how to blog.
Find Your Niche. You needn't have a niche however it can be helpful. It's important that you ask yourself what your passion is as you learn to be a blogger. Running? Cooking? Parenting? Did you find your passion? Write about it, if you've already done so. It is important to find the passion that you are passionate about first. This is why we say that you shouldn't create a blog on the subject unless your viewpoint is unique. If you've got an unique viewpoint and can live simply, you must consider it.
Identify Your ideal readers. After you've identified your niche, you have to identify who will be the ones who will be. For example, we blog about how to live a fulfilling life with less. Thus, our ideal readers are people who are looking to explore minimalism so they can clear the path toward more meaningful lives. If you're planning to write about your baby infant growing up, that's wonderful Your ideal readers are likely to be your family and friends. If you're planning to write about restoring classic automobiles, then that's fine as well. Tailor your writing to your readers (whether it's your family members or your local community, or anyone else who will be reading your blog).
Add value. Your blog's content must bring value to your readers' lives. Helping people solve their problems is what you're looking for. This is how you will draw in high-quality visitors to your website and keep them coming back. By adding value, you are the only way that someone will keep supporting your website over time. This is something we discovered after a decade of managing and leading people within corporate America. You should consider if you are making a difference in everything you write.
Be original. There are many blogs that are covering the same topics as yours. Your blog is unique, so why? Answer: Because you are. Your blog is unique because of your uniqueness. It's all about your viewpoint your uniqueness, your creativeness, and the value you add.
Create something interesting. Write interesting blog posts. Particularly if you want people to share it with others.
Be You. The ability to tell your story is an important aspect of being intriguing. Your story is important because everybody is unique. The most important aspect of telling a story is removing the superfluous details that make the story uninteresting. The best storytellers will cut out most of the details that are not relevant and leave the interesting 1% to the reader.
Be Honest. If you want people to visit your blog, it must be authentic. Your blog can be your blog or you can make it your blog. That is how authentic are you in the stuff you write about? The public will judge you if you do not. Gandhi's famous quote states, "Be the change that you desire to see around the world." Bloggers should create the blog they are passionate about and write for all of humanity.
Transparency. Being transparent isn't the same thing as being honest. Transparency is not the same as honesty. You won't find any photos of us using the bathroom because all we write about must be for the good of the community.
Time. Time. Instead, you should concentrate on writing.
Vision. Vision. We both was ever involved in design before starting our blog. If you don't know what you would like your blog to appear, it's difficult to create an appealing one.
Find Your Voice. Good writers find their voice with time, and their writing develops an aesthetic that appeals to their readers. Writing will be more real, alive, and urgent when you find your voice. You can read more about Finding Your Voice on our blog.
Instead of you, we. If you can, use the plural in the first person. Statements of we and our are more effective than you and your particularly when discussing undesirable behaviors or habits. The harsh tone of the former person is much more effective. Consider it this way: We're writing peer-to-peer, we're not gods.
When to Post. The question is: What's the ideal time and day to write a blog post? Answer: It really doesn't matter. We don't have an exact time of day, but we do publish every week at least once as consistency is essential. However, you don't need to be too involved with all the particulars.
Social Media. We suggest using Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter to connect with your readers. However, don't become too involved. The writing is the most important part of blogging. Social media is a follower.
Negative Criticisms and insanity are ignored. Yes, we receive a lot of negative comments and stupid questions. However, they're not our readers. These are the seagulls. They come in, trash your site and then leave. We don't pay them a mind, since we didn't begin our blog to please them. Remove their comment and go on.
Research. Research is the most important aspect. The reason we are able to use numerous useful, relevant links in our writing is because we put in the time to research our topics.
Keep It Simple. This is why minimalism can be applied to beginning any blog, regardless of the genre. There's no need to add unnecessary advertisements or widgets to your site. Stay with the basics and eliminate anything you don't want. Remove any content that doesn't contribute value.
Picture. Put a picture of yourself on your blog. People love to look at the faces of the person who's writing the blog. If two jolly guys from Dayton, Ohio aren't too worried about putting their photos on their site and you don't have anything to worry about.
Comments. If you're planning on having comments on your blog you should read the Five Words that Kill Your Blog by Scott Stratten.
Living Your Life. You're making a blog about your life (or on specific areas of your life at the very least), so you still need to live your life. It is important to always put exercise first as well as health and relationships. Simply put, lead a life worth writing about.
15 Reasons to Begin a Blog
After reading Joshua Becker's 15 reasons I believe you Should Start a Blog and we were moved to investigate this topic further and then create. In the article, he outlines 15 reasons to start a blog.
Why is the word that is used here. It is crucially important that Becker writes about the purpose of blogging and not just how to start a blog. That's what many of these others "blogs on blogging" appear to overlook: they miss the reason behind the blog, the reason behind starting blogs.
Here's a brief summary of our three favorite reasons from Becker's list:
You'll become a better writer. Writing is communication at its core. Becker writes that writing is about putting your thoughts down on paper and convincing others to agree with you. Writing, just like other kinds of communication, gets better with practice. You won't be forced to write better It will come naturally as you practice it. Achieving a higher level of writing has important advantages for the rest of your life--whether you are creating the book, a PowerPoint of your resume, an anniversary card for your spouse." This is exactly what you need to do! This isn't just a fantastic way of improving your blog writing but it's also a fantastic chance to enhance all aspects of your writing--from business email and texts to that novel you've been fantasizing about.
You'll meet new people. "Whether it be through comments email, social media, you might be surprised at how quickly you meet people on the internet," writes Becker. That's true! The Minimalists blog is responsible for many of the most important relationships I've developed over the last decade, long-term personal and business relationships that were born by this blog.
You'll be more confident. "Blogging will help you discover greater confidence in your daily life," writes Becker. It will be easy to realize that you're a worthy person with your own unique perspective and something you can be able to share with other people. So true! Writing can help us comprehend the world we live and the effects of our actions.
Three Reasons Not to Begin A Blog
You now have 15 reasons why you should start a blog, and we've explained how to get started with a blog, step-by-step, from our own personal experiences.
We'll give you the information that could save hundreds of hours and prevent you from spending your time. (Keep in mind that these are just our opinion and we don't pretend to offer them up as a set of scientific blogging tips.)
Money. You shouldn't begin a blog in order to make money. First, we need to eliminate that obstacle out of the way first. Don't think about blogging if your primary objective is to supplement your full-time income. This isn't the way to go. Are you sure Jimi Hendrix bought his first guitar to "supplement" his income? No, he didn't. Instead, he was doing it out of love for it, and for the pleasure and satisfaction that he felt, and the income was soon after, but much later.
Notoriety. Don't plan on getting "Internet famous" right away. There aren't many sites that grow like ours did, however that's ok. We kind of got lucky. We found a good domain name, we cobbled together a logo and website design that people liked We write pretty well, and our writing resonated with people in an unusual way.We did not create this website to make it "famous," though. That would be a stretch. The site was designed to help people become bloggers and to spread the word. We were awestruck by how popular we became. This was due to luck and hard work.
Traffic. Traffic is not all good traffic. Don't worry about getting thousands of readers instantly. If you help people solve their issues, you can invest your time in creating meaningful creations. Also, you should focus on providing value and not just increasing traffic.
It's amazing to think that these kinds of things are possible. A blog may suffice to earn an income that is full-time. It's something we've done, Corbett Barr does, and many others. It is possible to become an Internet well-known blogger, such as Leo Babauta or Chris Brogan.
But if those are the only motives for you to start a blog, you'll be miserable because it's going to feel like an occupation. If it's an occupation, you'll not be passionate about it, which means you'll hate it or fall flat on your face (or both).
You can also become a blogger because it's what you love to do...
How do you start your blog without spending a dime?
The good news is that starting your own blog is completely free using WordPress. Hosting is the only thing you will need, as detailed in the steps above.
You can also set up a blog using free services such as Tumblr and Blogger. Just be careful, because you might not be able to own the content you post if you're publishing it on the website of someone else. This is one of many reasons why we use WordPress.
How often should I blog?
In my conversations with my writing students I suggest writing every day, and publishing blogs at least once per week. The blog typically publishes two blog posts per week. Seth Godin blogs every single day.
No matter what you decide to do, we recommend you stay steady. You can create accountability with your partners (your readers) by making a daily writing plan. This will help you feel more motivated to write even if it's not your desire.
What should my blog's first post be about?
Avoid grandiosity. Do not clear your throat. The first blog post you write should not be a grandiose mission declaration. Your blog's first post doesn't need to be a dull introduction to your blog.
Instead, pick a topic that you are interested in and write about it. Follow the suggestions in the "What should I blog about" section.
To help you, go back to the blog's first post on this blog, in the year 2010 Be on the Mountain.
How can you present yourself to your blog?
Don't worry about how you present yourself in each blog article. Instead, make an "about" page for new readers to refer to if they'd like know more about you, your life and the projects you are involved in. For an example, check out The Minimalists About page. Our good friend Derek Sivers also has a wonderful Now page that can help you.
What causes blogs to fail?
Blogs can fail for at the very least three reasons:
Some bloggers have unrealistic expectations. If you begin an online blog today and anticipate to have a million visitors in a matter of hours you're creating a recipe for failing. If your motive is genuine-if you're looking to add value to the world-then you'll notice that your expectations will change.
Some bloggers don't add value. Instead of focusing on metrics like subscribers or follower counts, The Minimalists focus on adding value to our readers. Success will come from solving problems for people, and not the reverse.
Bloggers tend to place money first. While it's fine to make money blogging (as we do) however, it isn't the main reason to start a blog. Good blogs make money; good blogs can make a difference. Said another way: We allow money to get a seat in the car, but it's never the driver.
